What is Christianity? What is Modernity? And why is it important to understand both of these phenomena today? This course addresses these questions through both scholarly analyses and an extended case study that can be streamed online. Though this material happens mostly in the present, students will learn about key issues in the history of western Christendom that still impact the present day. We will touch on the late medieval and Reformation eras, the emergence of race-thinking, the Enlightenment, secularization, the importance of modern media, and other intellectual, social and political challenges facing Christianity in the 19th and 20th centuries.
